This presentation will focus on when to suspect these disorders, how to evaluate them, and what to recommend to parents for these problems.

Speaker: Dr. Benard P. Dreyer

Topics Covered in the

Webinar Series

Children with specific learning disorders have trouble with academic success in school. Often, these problems are either revealed in the child's experience or later when demands for school are greater. In addition to academic success, this leads to poor self-esteem and a sense of failure and inferiority in the children. Most of these children have normal or high intelligence, but of course intellectual disability sometimes must be ruled out. In addition, ADHD, which is not a learning disability often interferes with learning and needs to be ruled in, or ruled out since specific treatment for ADHD may be very helpful. Children with ADHD have co-morbid learning disorders as well as anxiety, depression, and oppositional defiant disorders (ODD) that interfere with learning.

By the end of this lecture, you should be able to state the specific learning disorders and other complicating disorders, be familiar with common tools that a pediatric primary care provider can use to evaluate and follow progress and analyze reports from psychologists and other testers which have testing results for these children.

There are three specific learning disorders:

  1. Specific Reading Disorder or Dyslexia

  2. Specific Writing Disorder or Dysgraphia

  3. Specific Math Disorder or Dyscalculia
